Steven Finn has been ruled out of the Ashes tour and sent home in the latest blow to England’s preparations down under.
Having injured himself during net practice on Thursday (reportedly bending down while batting) in Perth, scans have revealed torn cartilage in the area, meaning early estimates that he would only miss the warm-up matches were overly optimistic. England have said a replacement for Finn will be announced shortly.

Finn had only been included in the squad as a replacement for Ben Stokes anyhow, but with Toby Roland-Jones and Lions call-up Jamie Porter – a county champion with Essex – both suffering stress fractures of the back and Mark Wood still trying to prove his fitness, options are scarce. Liam Plunkett and Tom Curran, who have featured in limited-overs formats this summer, are the favourites to be called up as cover.
With Moeen Ali still out of action with an injury of his own, England’s likely line-up for their day-night warm-up in Adelaide starting on Tuesday is:
Cook, Stoneman, Vince, Root (c), Malan, Bairstow (wk), Woakes, Overton, Ball, Crane, Anderson
