Graeme Smith, the director of cricket at Cricket South Africa (CSA), and AB de Villiers have objected to reports that de Villiers had been offered a leadership role by CSA.
De Villiers was misquoted in an earlier press release as saying on Star Sports Cricket Connected that he had “been asked by Cricket South Africa to lead the Proteas again”.
Smith objected to the claims, dismissing the reports as “#fakenews” on Twitter. De Villiers also took to Twitter to clarify that no such offer had been made to him by the governing body of South African cricket. “Reports suggesting Cricket SA have asked me to lead the Proteas are just not true,” wrote de Villiers. “It’s hard to know what to believe these days. Crazy times. Stay safe everyone.”
Star Sports later released an updated transcript of the interview with de Villiers, showing that de Villiers never mentioned anything about being asked to lead South Africa.
