Praveen Jayawickrama charged with match-fixing

The ICC has charged Sri Lanka spinner Praveen Jayawickrama with three counts of breach of their Anti-Corruption Code.

Praveen Jayawickrama “allegedly failed to report” to ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) “without delay” about being “approached to carry out fixing” during both international matches as well as in the 2021 Lanka Premier League.

Jayawickrama was “found to have deleted messages” regarding the same. On August 8, 2024, the ICC confirmed that he has 14 days from August 6 – in other words, until August 20 – to respond to the charges. He has been charged with three counts of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.

The articles are 2.4.4 (Failing to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit, without unnecessary delay, details of an approach he received to carry out fixing) in future internationals; 2.4.5 (Failing to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit, without unnecessary delay, details of an approach he received in which he was asked to approach another player, on a corrupter’s behalf, to carry out fixing) in LPL 2021; and 2.4.7 (Obstructing the investigation by deleting messages in which the approaches and offers to engage in corrupt conduct were made).

As per the rules, the ICC will take action regarding the charges in the international games. Sri Lanka Cricket and the ICC have agreed that the latter will take action concerning the LPL charge as well.

Now 25, the left-arm spinner debuted for Sri Lanka in all three formats in 2021, but has not played international cricket since 2022. He has played five international matches in each of the formats, and is generally remembered for his 6-92 and 5-86 against Bangladesh at Pallekele in 2021, the first ten-wicket match haul by a Sri Lankan on Test debut, and taking 4-40 in his next Test match.
