Dewald Brevis’ red-hot first-class form came to an end after he was dismissed for a first-ball duck in the CSA 4-Day Series Division 1 final between the Titans and Lions at Johannesburg.
Brevis, the breakout star of the 2022 Under-19 World Cup and one of cricket’s most exciting batting prospects, has struggled to secure a regular place in the South African national side, featuring in just two T20Is so far. However, 2025 appears to be a turning point for the young prodigy. After a stellar SA20 campaign where he hit the most sixes and finished with the tournament’s highest strike rate, he carried that momentum into the CSA 4-Day Series Division 1 – South Africa’s premier first-class competition – with consistent performances.
He entered the final in blistering form, with scores of 148, 99, and 80 – all struck at a brisk pace. But the standout performance was arguably his final knock: a 57-ball assault for the Titans against the Rocks.
Facing an unbeaten Lions side in the final, the Titans would have hoped for Brevis to carry his red-hot form into the match. Instead, the worst possible anti-climax unfolded.
Dewald Brevis departs for golden duck in domestic first-class final
After the Lions declared their first innings at 413-7, the Titans faced the daunting task of surviving a tricky late spell on day three. But they crumbled against the Lions’ disciplined attack. Left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin struck first, removing Joshua van Heerden for just one run in the fourth over. Four overs later, pacer Lutho Sipamla compounded the misery by dismissing Titans captain Neil Brand.
That brought Brevis to the crease, but his stay lasted just one ball. Sipamla delivered a vicious snorter that squared him up, and a thick edge flew to third slip, where Wandile Makwetu completed a spectacular diving catch. Titans ended the day at 17-3, and were bowled out for 123 on day four. They have since been asked to follow on.
