England head to South Africa this winter for four Test matches in what promises to be a competitively fought series between two cricketing giants, ranked third and fourth in the ICC Test rankings respectively.

Both sides will be looking to get their Test World Championship campaigns off to the perfect start. The new ICC Championship begins in earnest immediately upon conclusion of the World Cup and South Africa must first travel to India, while England kick-off with a much-anticipated home Ashes series.

South Africa versus England is one of just four series being held in the calendar with four Tests or more, while both sides appear to be heading towards periods of transition on the back of retirement or the waning of powers of key figureheads.

The Proteas contains the exciting pace duo of Kagiso Rabada, one of the leading bowler’s in the world, and Lungi Ngidi, who claimed debut figures of 7-87 against India, as well promising opener Aiden Markram.

England’s swing bowling supremo James Anderson currently lies on 575 career Test wickets and will be hoping to hit the 600-mark against Australia this English summer.  In South Africa, he could be eyeing spinner Anil Kumble’s tally of 619 Test dismissals – the third highest wicket-taker of all-time and one place ahead of Jimmy.

The second Test match between the two sides takes place from January 3, 2020 at Newlands in Cape Town, the venue that played host to Ben Stokes’ swashbuckling 258 and Jonny Bairstow’s maiden century the last time England toured the country. It was also the venue for the infamous ball-tampering scandal that engulfed Australian cricket last year.

Stokes’ innings remains the fastest double-century in the history of Test cricket, coming from 163 balls, and formed part of a scarcely believable morning of cricket in which the left-hander piled on 130 runs pre-lunch, as well as sharing an eventual stand of 399 with Bairstow, both also records.
