The live Sky Sports Cricket coverage of the first day’s play of the first Test between England and West Indies at the Ageas Bowl was hampered by technical issues, which prevented some of the action being shown.
The difficulties started between the fourth and fifth balls of the first over, after Rory Burns survived a review of a ‘not out’ lbw decision. For the rest of the over, commentator Michael Holding was forced to relay what was happening verbally as the feed showed fast bowler Kemar Roach walking back to his mark in slow motion.
“Apologies, everyone at home,” said Holding. “We’re having some technical problems here, which is why you’re constantly seeing Roach walking back. He has actually bowled another ball. Nothing that you have missed, it was a dot ball. Our apologies again, but we are back.”
While live pictures soon resumed, no replays could be shown, including of Dom Sibley’s dismissal, and the footage was shown without any score or player details. The ECB couldn’t confirm whether DRS was affected.
“Our apologies everyone, we have not totally gotten over our technical issues, we are still a few cameras down,” said Holding. “There’s been 117 days since we’ve had international cricket. I’m not too sure if I even remember how to commentate, so technical issues, you’re going to have to live with those.” Not long after, the players left the field for a rain delay, and when they returned, so too had the graphics and the replays.
