Watch: A mix-up in the middle sees Nuwanidu Fernando run out for 50 on debut after India’s Shubman Gill narrowly misses catch.

Ahead of his Sri Lanka debut, Nuwanindu would probably have taken a half-century to open his international run-scoring account. However, the opener will be kicking himself for the way his innings came to an end.

Despite losing three batting partners as he helped his side past the 100-run mark, 23-year-old Nuwandindu continued steady progress towards his personal milestone. Having reached 50, Fernando chipped a ball towards mid wicket that was fumbled by Gill.

Thinking he had been given a reprieve and a chance at a quick single, he set off running, only for Charith Asalanka to send him back. Gill and keeper KL Rahul were able to complete a relatively easy run-out, leaving Sri Lanka four wickets down without a set batter.

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 215, with Mohammed Siraj taking 3-30, Kuldeep Yadav 3-51, and Umran Malik 2-48. Nuwaindu’s 50 remained the highest score of the innings, though Kusal Mendis made 34 and Dunith Wellalage 32.
