On January 20 against the Rangpur Riders, Shoaib Malik had become the second cricketer, after Chris Gayle, to reach 13,000 runs in Twenty20 cricket. He also became the first to do the 13,000-run-100-wicket double.

Malik’s 219 catches are also the fourth-most among non-wicketkeepers in Twenty20 history, after Pollard (351), David Miller (286), and Dwayne Bravo (267).

On January 22, Malik’s team Fortune Barishal was up against the Khulna Tigers at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Asked to bat, Barishal struggled in the early stages before Mushfiqur Rahim (68 not out in 39 balls) and Mahmudullah (27 in 19) took them to 187-4.

Coming to bat in the 19th over, Malik remained unbeaten on five from six balls. After the Khulna openers, captain Anamul Haque and Evin Lewis, took 33 off the first three overs, Tamim Iqbal brought Malik into the attack.

After Anamul ran a single off Malik’s first ball, Lewis put away the second ball for four, but Malik did not concede a run off the third ball. He overstepped, but came back strongly with two dot balls including the free hit. At this point, his figures read an impressive 0.5-0-6-0.

But he overstepped again, and yet again, on the free hit. Lewis could not get a run off the first ball, but put away the two free hits for four and six. Malik’s figures dropped to 1-0-18-0, and he was not recalled.

Anamul (63 not out in 44) and Lewis (53 in 22) as good as sealed the match with a 77-run opening stand in 5.3 overs. Afif Hossain (41 in 36) and Shai Hope (25 not out in 10) helped Khulna win with 12 balls and eight wickets in hand.
