On Saturday (August 24) morning, Dhawan released a video on social media announcing his retirement from all cricket, including domestic and international.
The left-handed opening batter made his international debut in 2010 and appeared 269 times for India across formats. He played 34 Tests scoring 2,315 runs at 40.61, 167 ODIs scoring 6,793 runs at 44.11, and 68 T20Is scoring 1,759 runs at 27.92. In ODIs, arguably his best format, Dhawan held the record for being the fifth-quickest to 6,000 runs in terms of innings batted.
Dhawan's last international appearance came in an ODI in Bangladesh in December 2022, before he was sidelined for Shubman Gill, who took over from him as Rohit Sharma's opening partner in ODIs.
In the IPL, Dhawan captained Punjab Kings earlier this year, which marked his last outing in competitive cricket.
As I close this chapter of my cricketing journey, I carry with me countless memories and gratitude. Thank you for the love and support! Jai Hind! 🇮🇳 pic.twitter.com/QKxRH55Lgx

In his announcement, Dhawan said, "It's important to turn the page to move forward in life and that's why I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket. I am leaving with peace in my heart that I played so long for India. I've told myself don't feel sad that you won't play for India anymore, but feel happy that you played for the country."
