The series is finally taking place, having previously been postponed in 2020 due to Covid-19. The headline news for either side is that the three-matches will see the return to international action for Jofra Archer, who has been absent from England duty for over two years due to injury.
The series is being sandwiched into six days as it takes place in the middle of South Africa’s inaugural T20 franchise competition the SA20 which has got underway and will pause for a week.
Similarly, England’s Test team is due to play a two-Test series in New Zealand which begins the following week.
South Africa’s big news is that they will have a new coach in the dugout, with Shukri Conrad and Rob Walter set to be new coaches for the national side, with the pair splitting red-and-white-ball duties. It is not yet known who coach will lead South Africa in which format but they are expected to be in place in time for the start of the series. Lance Klusener, who had been in the running for one of the jobs, withdrew his application in order to focus on working in franchise T20 leagues around the world.
Two of the three South Africa v England ODIs will take place in Bloemfontein with the third taking place in Kimberley. The first and third fixtures are day/night matches whilst the second ODI is a day time fixture.
