Rohit Sharma confirmed as captain for CT 2025 and WTC final 2025

A week after the T20 World Cup victory in the Americas, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit Sharma will lead India at the 2025 Champions Trophy and, subject to India’s qualification, the 2025 World Test Championship final.

Rohit became full-time captain of the senior men’s team across formats after Virat Kohli hung up his leadership boots in Test cricket following the 2021/22 tour of South Africa. He has led India at four ICC events, the 2022 T20 World Cup, the 2023 World Test Championship final, the 2023 World Cup, and the 2024 T20 World Cup, winning the latest one.

Rohit announced his retirement from the shortest format immediately after leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup final in Barbados. Shah's confirmation means Rohit will now have his eyes set on adding two more ICC trophies to his cabinet next year – the 2025 WTC and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Jay Shah: Confident of winning CT 25 and WTC 25 under Rohit's captaincy

In a video released today (July 7), Shah dedicated the T20 World Cup victory to the senior member's of the squad, including departing head coach Rahul Dravid, while also promising to bring home the upcoming two trophies.

"Massive congratulations to Team India for this historic victory," he said. "I would like to dedicate this victory to coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja.

"This was our third final in the last one year. We lost in the WTC final in June 2023. In November 2023, after ten consecutive victories, we won hearts but couldn't lift the trophy. I had said in Rajkot that we'll win hearts as well as the cup in June 2024, and hoist the Indian flag. And our captain did just that.

"Following this victory, the upcoming milestones are the WTC final and the Champions Trophy. I have complete faith that we'll be champions in both the tournaments under Rohit Sharma's captaincy."

The Champions Trophy is scheduled to be held in Pakistan between February and March next year, while the WTC final will be played in June 2025 in England. India are currently at the top of the WTC points table with a points percentage of 68.52, and are favourites for a spot in the final.
