Former South Africa fast-bowler Morne Morkel has reportedly been appointed as the bowling coach for the India men's team.

According to a Cricbuzz report, Morkel has been appointed as the new bowling coach of the India men's team. BCCI secretary Jay Shah has confirmed the news to the website.

Morkel's first assignment will be the Bangladesh Test series from September 19. He will succeed Paras Mhambrey, who was part of former head coach Rahul Dravid's coaching staff.

Morkel’s signing comes after several reports claimed he was the favourite to become India’s new fast-bowling coach. For the Sri Lanka series, India named an interim bowling coach in Sairaj Bahutule.

Morkel will now link up with new head coach Gautam Gambhir and his assistant Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate in India’s think tank. In the past, Gambhir had hailed Morkel as one of the best bowlers he had ever faced and had spoken about their strong off-the-field relationship. They were colleagues in Kolkata Knight Riders as players, and at the Lucknow Super Giants in coaching roles.

Morkel previously served as Pakistan’s fast-bowling coach. He resigned weeks after his contract was going to expire amid a series of radical changes Pakistan underwent after their ODI World Cup debacle last year.

Morkel has 309 Test wickets at 27.66 besides 188 ODI at 25.32 and 47 T20I scalps at 25.34. His 535 wickets are South Africa’s sixth-most across formats.

After three T20Is and two Tests against Bangladesh and three Tests against New Zealand, all at home, India will fly out to Australia to play the Border-Gavaskar trophy. They won the series down under on consecutive occasions, first in 2018/19 then in 2020/21.
