BCCI secretary Jay Shah is reportedly set to take over from Greg Barclay as the new chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah's possible candidature had a major boost after the incumbent Barclay decided not to stand for the third term.

According to a report by The Age, Shah will succeed incumbent ICC chair Barclay, whose tenure ends on November 30. The report says Barclay's resignation comes "amid a 3 billion USD dispute between the ICC and the major broadcast rights holder Star".

The report added: "Two sources with knowledge of discussions, speaking on condition of anonymity because negotiations are confidential, confirmed the move late on Tuesday night. "

The ICC also released a statement, confirming Barclay's departure: "ICC Chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the Board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022."

Shah could become the youngest ICC chief

With Barclay’s tenure ending, each of the 16 directors can file for nomination to succeed him. If there are multiple nominations, an election will be held in November, with the ICC getting a new chair on December 1.

Besides being the BCCI secretary, Shah is also the chair of the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs sub-committee. If the report comes true, Shah, 35, will become the youngest to head the ICC. He will join among the ranks of Jagmohan Dalmia, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar, the Indians who served as ICC’s chief in the past.
