“I still have ambitions of playing Test cricket in the future”
England leg-spinner Adil Rashid still has ambitions of playing Test cricket despite signing a white-ball only contract with Yorkshire for the 2020 season.
The 32-year-old, whose last Test appearance came over a year ago against West Indies, has struggled with a persistent shoulder injury and wishes to manage his workload ahead of this year’s T20 World Cup.
Rashid was recalled to England’s Test set-up in the summer of 2018 by national selector Ed Smith despite being on a limited-overs only contract for Yorkshire at the time. He was then told by Smith that he would have to make himself available across formats for his county side to be considered for Test selection, leading to a contract to play in all formats for Yorkshire in 2019.

Earlier this month Rashid – a regular in England’s limited-overs setup – ruled himself out of selection for the two-Test tour of Sri Lanka in March, telling Sky Sports that he had to “earn that right” by performing in county cricket; he also stated that his immediate focus was on white-ball cricket.
“I have decided to concentrate on white-ball cricket this summer in the lead up to the T20 World Cup,” Rashid said upon the announcement of his new one-year deal with Yorkshire. “This is due to an ongoing shoulder injury, so it is important for me to manage my workload to give me the best chance of remaining fit.
