Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan has been reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during his side's all-important Super 8 victory over Bangladesh.
Afghanistan needed victory to secure their first semi-final qualification at a global event, and did so in dramatic circumstances in a rain-affected contest littered with dramatic moments.
The ICC stated in a press release confirming the news: "Rashid was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match."
The incident in question occurred in the final stage of the Afghanistan innings, where Rashid, frustrated at not being handed back the strike by his partner Karim Janat, hurled his bat down the pitch into the vicinity of his teammate.
With a semi-final berth at stake, the Bangladesh bowlers had strangled the Afghanistan batters, leaving them languishing at 100-5 after the 19th over. Rashid lost his cool with his teammate after Janat failed to come back for a second run when Rashid had hit the previous ball for six.
Rashid receives one demerit point for the incident, his first such penalty in the last two years. Rashid has not received a ban for the incident.
Afghanistan take on South Africa in the first T20 World Cup semi-final. Neither side have previously qualified for a men's T20 World Cup final.
