Indian first-class sides Tripura and Madhya Pradesh have made history by being dismissed for 35 in the same round of Ranji Trophy games.
Madhya Pradesh’s low score came on January 9 against Andhra, and was marginally the more remarkable of the two, considering they were 35-3 before losing their final seven wickets without scoring. Right-arm seamer KV Sasikanth did the bulk of the damage, taking 6-18. Madhya Pradesh had also been bowled out 91 in their first innings, slumping to a 301-run defeat.
Tripura’s 35 all out came in the first innings of their Group C game at Agartala, on January 7. Left-arm seamer Aniket Choudhary was the destroyer-in-chief, claiming 5-11, remarkably his seventh five-for in five games for Rajasthan.
It could have been worse. Tripura slumped to 22-6 – effectively 22-7 with their captain Smit Patel having retired hurt – but 11* from No. 9 Neelambuj Vats ensured they climbed into the thirties.
Rajasthan responded with 218, enough to win by an innings as Tripura struggled again in their second innings. For a moment ‘bettering’ their first innings score was a possibility as they slipped to 34-7 – again effectively 34-8 with Patel still absent injured – but the tail wagged to ensure they crossed three figures before they were dismissed for 106.
The game underlined the two teams’ fortunes this season. While Rajasthan are flying high, sitting top of the table unbeaten with seven wins and two draws, Tripura sit second last in the group with one win, six losses, and two draws.
