England’s search for a T20I opening bowler has led to talk of a recall for recently appointed Yorkshire T20 Blast captain David Willey.
Eoin Morgan’s side have recently struggled to take early wickets, only managing one Powerplay dismissal in the three-match series win against South Africa.
Willey – who was dropped from England’s ODI World Cup squad to accommodate Jofra Archer – has taken 34 wickets in 28 matches since his T20I debut against New Zealand in June 2015. His most recent cap came in May last year against Pakistan.
On the latest episode of the Wisden Cricket Weekly Podcast, Taha Hashim raised the question of whether Willey deserves another international opportunity with Wisden Cricket Monthly‘s magazine editor Jo Harman and editor-in-chief Phil Walker:
TH: I think there should be a mention of David Willey, one of England’s best new-ball bowlers in T20Is who has been harshly discarded.
PW: Did you say that because you saw him on the telly at lunchtime at The Oval?

TH: No – I say it because Sam Curran didn’t get a look in so we can’t really talk about him as the left-arm seamer with the new ball. It feels like Willey’s disappeared and I just thought I should mention that.
JH: Freddie Wilde picked his T20 team of the decade for wisden.com at the back end of last year and put David Willey in that – which didn’t go down especially well in India when I don’t think Dhoni was in the side.
PW: The hipster’s choice.
