DPL 2024 - South Delhi Superstarz v Purani Dilli 6

The first day of DPL 2024 witnessed a mixed fortune for the IPL stars featuring in the tournament.

DPL 2024, the inaugural edition of the Delhi Premier League, teed off with a match between South Delhi Superstarz and Purani Dilli 6 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on August 17.

After South Delhi won the toss and opted to field, all eyes were on Purani Dilli captain Rishabh Pant. The biggest name of this edition by some distance, Pant is currently the captain of Delhi Capitals and had led India in 2022. In the match, however, he struggled with the bat, ambling to a 32-ball 35 before Kunwar Bidhuri had him caught by Priyansh Arya.

Pant’s Delhi Capitals teammate Lalit Yadav, however, chipped in with a 21-ball 34 not out after opener Arpit Rana top-scored with a 41-ball 59. A late burst from wicketkeeper Vansh Bedi (47 not out in 19 balls) took Purani Dilli to 197-3.

For South Delhi, Rajasthan Royals seamers Kuldip Yadav and Shubham Dubey went wicketless, but captain Ayush Badoni – a mainstay at the Lucknow Super Giants for some time – chipped in with the wicket of Rana in his spell of 4-0-27-1.

South Delhi openers Priyansh Arya (57 in 30 balls) and Sarthak Ray (41 in 26) added 87 in 41 balls in response. Once Ray fell, Badoni walked out to take charge and carved out a 29-ball 57 with six sixes. There was a collapse as South Delhi slipped from 152-1 to 183-7, but in the end they won with three wickets and five balls in hand.

The collapse included a wicket for Lalit, who caught Sumit Mathur off his own bowling and finished with 1-30 in three overs. Off-spinner Shivam Sharma, who had played for the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) until 2015, finished with 4-0-38-2: he dismissed both South Delhi openers.
