Jhulan Goswami played her last international match on Saturday during the third ODI against England, in a game that was enveloped by plenty of emotions.

Goswami ended her career with 255 scalps, picking up two wickets in her final game at Lord’s. She ended with figures of 10-3-30-2, sending down 10,005 deliveries in her ODI career. Katherine Brunt, with 6,847 balls, is second on the list, while Shabnim Ismail has the second-most wickets in the format (191).

Making her India debut in January 2002, Goswami went on to play a total of 12 Test matches, 204 ODIs and 68 T20Is. She grabbed 44 wickets in the longest format and picked up another 56 in T20Is to end with a total of 355 wickets for India.

She is only the second women’s player after Mithali Raj to turn out in more than 200 ODIs, and is the only India player to end with the double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in 50-over internationals.

Goswami was honoured with a memento ahead of the game and also walked out to the toss alongside captain Harmanpreet Kaur. She stayed in the spotlight throughout the third ODI, receiving a guard of honour from the England fielders when she walked out to bat. Unfortunately, she was dismissed first ball.

Before walking out to bowl, the Indian fielders gave her a running guard of honour and collectively embraced her after she sent down her final delivery, on the 36th over of England’s innings. After India won the clash, and the series, Goswami was lifted by her teammates in their arms, before she went around the ground with the tricolour, soaking in the applause of the spectators.

Following the match, a visibly emotional, Kaur said: “When I debuted, she was the leader, in my best times, many were supporting me, but even in my rough times, she was the one who supported. She is just a call away. I wanted to thank her and tell her she is always with us. She is a go-to person, I always called her at low times and she was someone always guiding me on.”

She was also lauded for all her feats by players, experts and well-wishers on social media.
