Kane Williamson, who is nursing an elbow injury, is ruled out, with Tom Latham stepping in as captain for the series. Three players, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell and Will Young, have earned their maiden T20I call-up, but have already featured in one other format for the team. Incidentally, the first ODI of the series will be Latham’s 100th for New Zealand.
The side has just the one spinner in Mitchell Santner, with Ish Sodhi, the leading wicket-taker in the T20Is against Australia, missing out. Daniel Vettori, the former NZ skipper and now Bangladesh spin consultant feels that spin will play a key part in the white-ball series.
It will be New Zealand’s first series since they played Australia in March 2020, the last completed international series before Covid-19 brought cricket to a standstill.
Colin de Grandhomme, who suffered an ankle injury, has been ruled for at least eight weeks, and is out of contention alongside Lockie Ferguson, who is recovering from a back injury.
Despite Williamson’s absence, the team is filled with plenty of experience in the form of Ross Taylor, Martin Guptill, Trent Boult and Tim Southee, among others.
Bangladesh named a 20-member squad for the New Zealand tour – you can find the complete team list here.
