Michael Vaughan, while discussing the intricacies of opening the batting on the Tuffers and Vaughan podcast alongside Alastair Cook and Rory Burns, recalled the “worst shot” he has ever played.

It was in Napier, during the third Test of England’s tour of New Zealand in 2007/08 when Vaughan came up with a shot that he doesn’t remember as fondly as some of the others from his career.

Opening alongside Cook, he tried to pull an out-swinging delivery from debutant Tim Southee – a shot which, surprisingly enough for Vaughan, “is not replayed endlessly on Twitter”.

Though Vaughan was dismissed cheaply by Southee in the first innings of the match, England managed to win the encounter by 121 runs and sealed the three-Test series 2-1 with it.
