Michael Vaughan, while discussing the intricacies of opening the batting on the Tuffers and Vaughan podcast alongside Alastair Cook and Rory Burns, recalled the “worst shot” he has ever played.
It was in Napier, during the third Test of England’s tour of New Zealand in 2007/08 when Vaughan came up with a shot that he doesn’t remember as fondly as some of the others from his career.
Opening alongside Cook, he tried to pull an out-swinging delivery from debutant Tim Southee – a shot which, surprisingly enough for Vaughan, “is not replayed endlessly on Twitter”.

“In Napier, and things weren’t going so well and I was angry, something wasn’t right and I had to go out and bat,” he said. “And I played the worst shot. I’m amazed it is not replayed endlessly on Twitter. I tried to pull a Tim Southee away-swinging half volley into the rugby stands. Short, square of the wicket – it was just in my mind, it was nothing to do with it. My mind was all over the place.”

Though Vaughan was dismissed cheaply by Southee in the first innings of the match, England managed to win the encounter by 121 runs and sealed the three-Test series 2-1 with it.
