Mumbai, erstwhile Bombay, are the most successful side in the history of the Ranji Trophy. They have won it 39 times in 88 attempts – a whopping 44.3 percent. With eight titles, second-best Karnataka are not even in the horizon..

Additionally, Mumbai have appeared in 47 Ranji Trophy finals (53.4 percent) – in other words, at a rate better than every alternate edition. Bengal’s 15, the next best, is not even a third of Mumbai’s tally.

However, Mumbai have not won the Ranji Trophy since 2015/16, which also remains their only title since the 2012/13 edition – a lean patch by their astonishing standards. Since 2015/16, they have made to the final only twice, in 2016/17 and 2021/22.

Mumbai are in Group B in the 2023/24 season. They host three matches this time, against Andhra at the Bandra-Kurla Complex from January 12, against Uttar Pradesh at Wankhede Stadium from January 26, and against Assam at Wankhede Stadium from February 16.

Mumbai’s away matches will be against Bihar at Patna from January 5, Kerala at Thumba from January 19, Bengal (the venue is unconfirmed yet) from February 2, and Chhattisgarh at Raipur from February 9.

The Mumbai Cricket Association named their squad for the first two matches, against Bihar and Andhra. This edition of the Ranji Trophy is important for captain Ajinkya Rahane and Sarfaraz Khan, who will both claim a stake at the Indian middle order, while Shivam Dube will want to convince the selectors of his credentials as a seam-bowling all-rounder.

Other notable names include fast bowler Tushar Deshpande, who rose in stature during his IPL stint with the Chennai Super Kings; spin-bowling all-rounder Shams Mulani, who was picked for the Rest of India at the most recent edition of the Irani Cup; and veteran seamer Dhawal Kulkarni.

A significant omission is of Prithvi Shaw, who has perhaps not recovered from the injury he had picked up during his Northamptonshire stint this summer. However, he may return
