In the third and final women’s T20I between India and West Indies on Thursday (December 19), Smriti Mandhana went past Chamari Athapaththu to set a new world record for the most women’s T20I runs scored in a calendar year.
In the series decider in Navi Mumbai, India racked up 217-3, their highest-ever T20I total to beat West Indies by 60 runs, claiming their first bilateral series victory at home since 2019.
The record score was set up by Mandhana who smashed her third fifty on the trot, off 27 balls to take India to 61-1 at the end of the powerplay. On 154-3 in the 16th over, the hosts scored 63 more with Richa Ghosh blasting 44 of those. She scored a 17-ball half-century, the joint-fastest in the format alongside Sophie Devine and Phoebe Litchfield.
In doing so, Mandhana also became the first Indian woman to score a fifty in each of their innings in a bilateral T20I series of three matches or longer.
Hayley Matthews (West Indies), Ni Putu Ayu Nanda Sakarini (Indonesia), Andre-Mae Zepeda (Austria), Sarah Taylor (England) and Stafanie Taylor (West Indies) have all made three in three like Mandhana, while New Zealand's Sophie Devine managed four in four against South Africa in 2020.
R Ashwin ends his career as the ONLY Test player to pick up 450 wickets and make more than five hundreds 👏
