India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana equalled a world record after being dismissed for 91 in the first women’s ODI against West Indies in Vadodara.
After being sent to bat, Mandhana and debutant Pratika Rawal put the hosts on the front foot with a 110-run opening stand. That was India’s first century opening partnership at home in six years, having last registered one in 2018.
Rawal, who replaced an out-of-form Shafali Verma, contributed with a 69-ball 40. Her departure on the second ball of the 24th over didn’t deter Mandhana from playing her strokes. Mandhana was motoring along for a well-deserved century before Zaida James pinned her lbw for 91 in the 32nd over, leaving India at 160-2.
The southpaw could have become only the second batter to hit back-to-back hundreds twice, after Tammy Beaumont. Having achieved the feat for the first time in June this year, Mandhana entered the match with a 105 against Australia this year. As luck would have it, she fell agonisingly short.
Harleen Deol (44), and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (34) were all among the runs. Two cameos – Richa Ghosh’s 26 off 13 and Jemimah Rodrigues’ 19-ball 31 – ensured the home side reached closer to the 300-run mark. Deepti Sharma finished unbeaten on 14 to stretch India’s score to 314-9, their fifth-highest in the format.
