Eoin Morgan, England’s limited-overs captain, has said that he will reassess his playing career at the conclusion of the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled for October and November this year.
Talks of the 33-year-old’s future in the international game have been abound ever since he led England to the 50-over World Cup for the first time last year, but Morgan has said that he is non-committal for the time being.
“We’ll just have to wait and see,” he said. “I haven’t said anything about retiring after the World Cup in Australia. I will try and reassess things after the following World Cup. So we’ll just wait and see when that is and how we go, and where my body and my career are then.”

However, the tournament that Morgan says will clear up his future is itself under a cloud due to the coronavirus pandemic. Despite Australia’s success in flattening the coronavirus curve early and the few number of deaths, as opposed to several other countries in the world, international travel remains unlikely for the foreseeable future, with live crowds at grounds seeming even more distant.
Currently in lockdown, Morgan welcomed this unprecedented break in the otherwise relentless international calendar, a break that has turned out to be a blessing, having come at a time when he’s just had a child.

“We had a child eight weeks ago now, which has been pretty busy and actually helping us through any uncertain times,” he said. “It’s certainly kept us distracted. There’s also been reading some books, watching a lot of TV series, so the actual period for us, apart from everything that’s gone on outside, which is horrific at the moment, with the virus, it’s been thoroughly enjoyable for a couple of reasons.

“One, I get to spend time with our newborn, but the other is we never actually get this period of time at home, so to have a prolonged period of time at home and with your family is pretty cool. I’m trying to embrace it and see the positives of this period in our lives. Although uncertain, we’ve been certainly blessed with a bit of luck.”
