England white-ball captain Eoin Morgan smashed an unbeaten 83 from just 29 balls to help Middlesex pull off the highest successful run-chase in T20 Blast history against Somerset on Friday.
Morgan hit eight sixes and five fours as his side reached their target of 227 with three overs to spare. He was supported by Dawid Malan, who made 41 off just 14 balls in an opening partnership of 67 from 3.5 overs with Paul Stirling, and AB de Villiers, whose innings of 32 from 16 balls was ended by a spectacular catch by Max Waller on the boundary.

In a T20 classic dominated by the bat, Somerset racked up 226-5, thanks to captain Tom Abell’s superb unbeaten century and 62 from Tom Banton, who now has 549 runs at a strike rate of 161.47 in this season’s competition. Despite star batsman Babar Azam falling first ball early on, Somerset powered to an imperious total, with Ed Byrom (44 off 20) adding some late fireworks with four sixes.
Malan and Stirling’s lightning start gave Middlesex a real chance, before Morgan’s second fifty-plus score of the season, in an unbroken partnership of 99 with George Scott, completed a remarkable run chase and sealed a quarter-final match-up against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge on September 5.
The other quarter-final match-ups will see Lancashire take on Essex on September 4, Sussex play Worcestershire two days later before Derbyshire meet Gloucestershire next Saturday.
