World Cup-winner Eoin Morgan is contemplating stepping down as England’s limited-overs captain due to a long-term back injury.
When asked if he would like to lead the side in the T20 World Cup in Australia next year, however, he replied: “Absolutely. Who doesn’t?”
But the 32-year-old is unsure whether his body can continue to withstand the rigours of international cricket, insisting that “when you lead, you have to lead from the front,” having limited his training regime during England’s first men’s Cricket World Cup triumph earlier this summer.
He was unable to bat during the group-stage clash versus West Indies with a back spasm but managed to play every game of England’s epic tournament. Despite making four T20 Blast appearances for Middlesex this season, he missed the match against Sussex on August 9 with a similar complaint.

Morgan, who captains both the T20I and ODI sides, having played a leading role in England’s white-ball transformation in recent years, has offered no guarantees over his future, conceding he requires “more time to think.”
“It’s a physical thing,” said Morgan. “I need time to get back fit. I want to do it but I don’t want to let anyone down. I need more time to think, that’s the honest answer. It’s a big decision, a big commitment.

“I need the season to end pretty soon so I can have that time to physically get fit and know it’s not an injury risk, then I’ll be able to make a call on it.”
Morgan will need to decide in advance of England’s next limited-overs assignment – a five-match T20I series in New Zealand in November.
