Australia’s Megan Schutt became the first woman to claim two international hat-tricks, registering her first one in ODIs during her side’s eight-wicket win over West Indies Women in North Sound, Antigua.

Schutt picked up the last three wickets of West Indies’ innings, helping bowl the team out for 180, and finishing with 3-24 from her 10 overs. Later, Alyssa Healy’s quickfire half-century [61 off 32], and a steady fifty by skipper Meg Lanning [58], helped chase down the target inside 32 overs, completing a 3-0 series sweep for Australia on Wednesday, September 11.

Schutt’s was also the first hat-trick by an Australian woman in ODIs. Her first international hat-trick came in March last year, in a T20I against India, but was split across two overs. On Wednesday, she was glad to have captured all three victims in the same over.

“It was good to actually take it all in the one over,” Schutt told cricket.com.au. “It is kind of luck of the draw, it was the last over of the innings so you’re either getting hit for six or getting wickets.

“I just hoped for the best really, I know my back-of-the-hand slower ball is effective on wickets that turn a bit so I just looked to take as much pace off as I could.”

Along with Schutt, Lanning also added her name to the record books, overtaking Karen Rolton as Australia’s all-time leading run-getter across formats. Her unbeaten 58 took her past Rolton’s career tally of 6221 career runs. Only last week, she had become the fastest cricketer, male or female, to 13 ODI tons.

Australia now lead the ICC Women’s Championship, having taken a four-point lead over England with their latest win, but with three more games in hand. They’ll now face West Indies in the shortest format, in a three-T20I series starting September 15, all in Barbados.
