The Australia v New Zealand series might have been cancelled, but there’s always reason for Trans-Tasman rivalry – and Mitchell McClenaghan found it in a time of coronavirus.

“Is there anyway of moving our country a little further away from Australia?” the former New Zealand all-rounder tweeted, adding the hashtag “classic Aussies”.

His face-palm was prompted by news reports that Australians had flocked to Bondi Beach in Sydney on Friday, when temperatures exceeded 35°C. This despite social distancing rules in place to control the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, and a ban on gatherings of more than 500 people. Authorities have since closed the beach as well as nearby ones.

McClenaghan, who is in a 14-day self-isolation period in New Zealand since his premature return from the PSL, is taking the public health measures in his country seriously. For anyone still in doubt about what to do in a time of crisis, he had some succinct advice: “Think of your House as a Condom and Covid19 as a deadly incurable STD,” he tweeted.

“Protect yourself before your wreck yourself.”
