Former England batter Marcus Trescothick has been appointed interim head coach of England men's white-ball teams following the departure of Matthew Mott

Trescothick will take charge for the rest of England's home summer, which consists of an ODI and T20I series against Australia. England will play three T20Is and five ODIs between September 11-29. The former England top order batter has worked with the side as a batting coach since March 2021, and has previously expressed his desire to be a head coach.

Speaking on the Vaughany and Tuffers Cricket Club podcast in 2022, Trescothick said: "I do have aspirations to be a head coach. I know I want to do it in county cricket, franchise cricket and potentially international cricket down the line."

On Trescothick's appointment, managing director of England men's cricket, Rob Key, said: “Marcus Trescothick is well respected in the dressing room and will take charge of team affairs alongside white-ball captain Jos Buttler. Marcus and Jos [Buttler] have a good rapport, and I think their partnership will help us maintain continuity and stability.

“The search for a full-time replacement will now begin. It is essential that we go through the right process to ensure we get the best person for the job.”

Trescothick's appointment will continue until England find a permanent replacement for Mott. Mott stepped down from the role after two years as England head coach. He presided over their T20 World Cup win in 2022, the high-point of his tenure.

Over the last year, England have lost both their World Cup titles, firstly in a disastrous 50-over campaign in India, and then last month in a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign in the Caribbean.

There has been no announcement about whether Jos Buttler will remain England men's white-ball captain, but he is expected to continue through the Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan next year.
