Eighteen-year-old leg-spinner Lloyd Pope took 8-35 as Australia completed a sensational comeback to beat England in their Under 19 World Cup quarter-final in Queenstown, New Zealand.
Pope’s spell saw England’s in-form batting line-up bowled out for 96, having been 47-0 and 71-3 chasing just 128 to win.
This is terrific & brings a huge smile to my face. I had the pleasure of meeting this impressive young man in Adelaide a while ago ! Was nice to have a bowl with him too – Lloyd give it a rip – well done & congrats ! Spin to win my friend https://t.co/K4Ue2jaUfw

Pope, whose figures are the best ever in an Under 19 World Cup, came on to bowl with England without loss but took just nine balls to start tearing through their top order. Having had opener Liam Banks stumped he then clean bowled England captain Harry Brook first ball with a googly through the gate. The key wicket was that of Tom Banton (53) who fell to one of three excellent catches at slip by Aussie captain Jason Sangha when attempting a reverse-sweep.

Sangha had been the hero of his side’s stumbling batting effort, top-scoring with 58 while no one else managed more than 16, as Etha Bamber, Dillon Pennington and Will Jacks did the bulk of the damage with the ball, taking three wickets apieces.

The Australian under 19 captain is developing an impressive record against England, having become the youngest-ever Australian to make a first-class hundred against the senior side during an Ashes warm-up match last November.
