Jack Leach wrote himself into English cricketing folklore last summer with a single for the ages – a tuck into the leg side behind square to put Ben Stokes on strike during his colossal match-winning Ashes hundred at Headingley.
In an unbeaten partnership of 76, it was the sole run Leach offered from his 17-ball and hour-long rearguard stay at the crease, but it remains an innings that will be fondly remembered as a supporting act in one of the great cricketing comebacks.
And with the United Kingdom currently in lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus and protect the National Health Service, England’s bespectacled left-arm spinner certainly seems happy to preach the message of being “boring” in the manner of his Headingley knock, urging the public to stay at home.
