India celebrate after winning 2024 U19 women's Asia Cup

India won the inaugural edition of the Under-19 Women’s Asia Cup , beating Bangladesh by 41 runs in the final played in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (December 22).

After being asked to bat first, India could only manage 117-7. Barring Gongadi Trisha, no other batter notched up a substantial score. Opening the batting, Trisha scored a 47-ball 52 with the help of five fours and two sixes. Captain Niki Prasad made a scratchy 12 off 21 deliveries.

It was No.6 Mithila Vinod, who provided some late impetus to the innings with a 12-ball cameo at a strike rate of 141.66. Vinod’s little blitz contained two fours and six. Fast bowler Farjana Easmin was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers, finishing with 4-31, while Nishita Akter Nishi scalped twice and Habiba Islam once.

Defending the meagre total, three India left-arm spinners Parunika Sisodia, Aayushi Shukla and Sonam Yadav combined to pick seven of the Bangladesh batters.

The chasing team were off to an awful start, losing opener Mosammat Eva for a duck in the second over. Sumaiya Akhter, walking in at one down, also went for a single-digit score. Eva’s opening partner Fahomida Choya and wicketkeeper-batter Juairiya Ferdous made 18 and 22 respectively, while their captain Sumaiya Akter fell for three.

Having been reduced to 64-5, Bangladesh lost their remaining wickets for just 12 runs. Aayushi was the star with the ball for India, finishing with 3-17 in 3.3 overs. With 10 wickets to her tally at an average of 5.40 and an economy of 3.27, Aayushi ended the tournament with the most wickets.
