As per the latest ICC rankings, released July 31, Joe Root is the top-ranked batter in men’s Test cricket. He displaced Kane Williamson.
Joe Root’s 87 against the West Indies at Edgbaston took him past Brian Lara’s tally of 11,953 Test runs and made him the seventh cricketer in history to reach 12,000 runs in the format. They also took him to 872 points at the top of the ICC rankings, 13 clear of Kane Williamson’s tally of 859.
Not as fortunate was Harry Brook, who made only two runs in the match, and slipped four positions to seventh place. The other Englishmen in the top 20 are Ben Duckett (who held onto the 16th place) and Zak Crawley (who dropped from 17th to 20th). Kraigg Brathwaite fell from 40th to 41st place but is the only West Indian in the top 50.
Among bowlers, Jason Holder slid from 24th to 26th. Among the West Indians, he jointly holds the top spot with Jayden Seales, who gained seven places. Alzarri Joseph rose one place to 31st as well.
