Suryakumar Yadav has risen to No.1 in the ICC Men’s T20 Rankings, overtaking Mohammad Rizwan, who had been at the top of the table since September.
Suryakumar has been in stellar form in the ongoing 2022 T20 World Cup, scoring 15, 51 not out and 68 in three innings thus far, at a tournament strike rate of 179. No other player has made more runs at a better strike rate than him.
Suryakumar made his debut in February 2021 and has been unstoppable since then. He has scored 1,179 runs in 35 innings with 11 fifties and a high score of 117 against England this year. He averages 40.65 in the format, and his recent form – combined with Rizwan’s poor run in the T20 World Cup – resulted in him toppling the latter, surging 19 points ahead of him. Suryakumar currently has 863 rating points, which is also his best-ever. The only other Indian in the top ten is Virat Kohli, who is currently at 10th, after a couple of fifties in the T20 World Cup.
Rizwan has managed only 67 runs in three innings this edition, 49 of which came in one innings. With a rating of 842, he is clear of third-placed Devon Conway, who has 792. Babar Azam’s continued dip in form saw him drop to 780: he lost 10 points after the game against the Netherlands, where he made four.
Glenn Phillips was the other beneficiary on the list. He rose five places to scale seventh place following his 104 against New Zealand. He is the second New Zealand player in the top ten, after Conway.
Among bowlers, Wanindu Hasaranga rose four spots to second place in the latest list. Hasaranga’s 13 wickets are the most by anyone in the ongoing World Cup. Sam Curran rose to to sixth place, achieving a career-best rating of 665 points. The list is led by Rashid Khan.
