It was the first instance in one-day internationals that captains of both teams have been dismissed from their first ball faced. For Kohli, it was his third first-ball dismissal in 232 ODI innings and first in six years. For Pollard, it was a second golden duck in his 98th innings.

Walking in at No.3 after a 227-run opening stand between KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma, Kohli mistimed a short delivery off Pollard into the hands of Roston Chase at short mid-wicket, bringing up his 25th duck in international cricket and his 13th in ODIs.

For the first time in ODI history, both captains have been dismissed for a golden duck in the same game.

Chasing 378, Pollard came to the crease after the dismissal of Nicholas Pooran but ended up feathering an edge off Mohammed Shami to wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant.

A similar occurrence was witnessed in May this year, during the Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier match between Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. PNG skipper Kaia Arua was dismissed for a duck off the first legal delivery she faced. Her opposite number, Selina Solman was dismissed for a first-ball duck.

Kohli was the leading run-getter in ODIs in 2018 with 1202 runs from 14 innings at 133.55. Rohit was second on the list with 1030 runs from 19 innings.

The third game of the series, to held in Cuttack on Sunday, will be the final ODI for both sides this year.
