Karnataka, erstwhile Mysore, are the second-best side in the history of the Ranji Trophy. They have won it eight times, the second-most in the history of the tournament, after the 39 by Mumbai (earlier Bombay). Their 14 appearances in the final are the third-most, after Mumbai’s 47 and Bengal’s 15.
However, Karnataka have not reached the Ranji Trophy final since Vinay Kumar led them to consecutive titles in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 editions.
Karnataka have been placed in Group C in the 2023/24 season. They play three home matches this time, against Punjab at Hubballi from January 5, Goa at Mysuru from January 19, and Chandigarh at Hubballi from February 16.
They will also tour Ahmedabad to play Gujarat from January 12, Agartala to play Tripura from January 26, Surat to play Railways from February 2, and Chennai to play Tamil Nadu from February 9.
Karnataka will be led by Mayank Agarwal, who will play alongside fellow India international cricketers like Manish Pandey and Devdutt Padikkal. KL Rahul and Prasidh Krishna are are likely to be part of the Indian squad that will play five Test matches against England, and have not been included. Nikin Jose has been named Agarwal’s deputy.
Notable omissions include leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal (who moved to Kerala), all-rounder Krishnappa Gowtham, and wicketkeeper BR Sharath. Karun Nair’s County Championship stint with Northamptonshire was not enough to earn him a recall to the side.
