Keaton Jennings and Ben Foakes were in the runs on the second day of England Lions’ three-day game against Queensland Select at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

Jennings scored 89 from 148 balls and shared a second-wicket stand of 144 with Foakes, who like his Surrey team-mate Tom Curran was drafted into the Lions team from England’s Ashes squad for the chance of some match practice.
Foakes, who had shared wicketkeeping duties with Lancashire’s Alex Davies as the Queenslanders made 396-9 on day one, hit 67 from 94 balls with six fours and a six – watched by England head coach Trevor Bayliss and batting coach Mark Ramprakash, on their last day in Brisbane before heading south for the second Test in Adelaide.
“Obviously I’ve been netting a lot out here so it was nice to get out in the middle, share a stand with Keats and get a few runs,” said Foakes, who had been due to bat at four but was promoted one place in the order after Tom Westley suffered a finger injury in the field.
“They had a decent bowling attack, with a couple of guys who are regulars in the Brisbane Big Bash team, but Keaton played well against the new ball and was only out when he was trying to kick on.
“Me and TC have enjoyed linking up with the Lions again and playing some cricket. I kept for about two and a half hours over a couple of sessions which was good as well, and TC has bowled nicely. It means we will be a bit later than the rest of the squad getting down to Adelaide because they all flew today. But we’ll still be there in time for practice before the game.”

Foakes was positive about his first taste of the Ashes during the first Test.
“When you come out as back-up keeper you know your game time is going to be limited, but it’s still been special to be out here and to experience that Test,” he added.
“We had three days of hard work when I thought we played pretty well, and although it slipped away in the end, hopefully Adelaide will be a good place for us to come back.”
Captain Jennings declared the Lions innings on 250-5 in the hope of setting up a last-day run chase.

Curran and George Garton then took one wicket apiece, and Dom Bess joined his fellow Somerset spinner Jack Leach in the bowling attack for the first time in the match.
But the Queenslanders raced to 198-2 in their second innings and will resume on the last day with a lead of 344.
