Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Sunday announced plans to install a new, 40,000-capacity stadium in Homagama, touted to be the largest cricket stadium in the country, but former captain Mahela Jayawardene questioned the need for it.
The stadium, to be built on a 26-acre piece of land, which was visited on Sunday by SLC president Shammi Silva and minister Bandula Gunawardena, will be endowed with floodlight facilities and is set to be completed in three years.
“We think this will cost us around USD 30 to 40 million,” Silva said.

The announcement, however, was met with scepticism by former national team captain Jayawardene, who said it was unnecessary. “We don’t even play enough international cricket or domestic first-class cricket in the existing stadiums we have,” Jayawardene tweeted. “Do we need another one?”
Sri Lanka currently has eight international venues, with a maximum seating capacity of 35,000 spectators.
