Jasprit Bumrah of India celebrates after dismissing Marnus Labuschagne of Australia during day two of the Fifth Men's Test Match in the series between Australia and India at Sydney Cricket Ground on January 04, 2025 in Sydney, Australia

Jasprit Bumrah has won the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC men’s cricketer of the year for his stellar performance across formats in 2024.

Bumrah had taken 86 wickets in 21 matches at an average of 13.76 in 2024, putting up an all-time great performance in a calendar year. His exploits brought India their second T20 World Cup title as the pacer was adjudged the Player of the Tournament for his 15 wickets an average of 8.26 and an economy of just 4.17.

How many Indians have won the award?

Bumrah became the fifth Indian to be honoured with the award after Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), R Ashwin (2016) and Virat Kohli (2017, 2018). He pipped fellow nominees Travis Head, Joe Root and Harry Brook to the title.

This was the second individual ICC Award for Bumrah this year as earlier on Monday, he was also named ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for 2024. He was one of the rare bright spots in India's middling 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, finishing with 32 wickets, the most in that series by far with Pat Cummins being a distant second with 25 scalps. His 32 wickets were also the most by any India bowler away from home in a bilateral Test tour. He overtook Bishan Singh Bedi’s record, who had taken 31 Test wickets on the 1977/78 tour Down Under.

Riding on his breathtaking form, Bumrah became the first bowler to reach 200 Test wickets with a sub-20 bowling average.

The pacer also crossed the elusive 900-point mark in the latest ICC Test Bowling Rankings, finishing the year with a rating of 907, the highest by any Indian bowler ever.
