James Anderson will miss the rest of England’s Test series with South Africa after suffering a rib injury.
The 37-year-old seamer suffered the injury during the second Test at Newlands which England won on Friday. The injury limited him to bowling eight overs on the final day, with an MRI scan on Wednesday morning revealing an injury to his left rib.
The South Africa series marked Anderson’s return to international cricket after four months out, with a calf problem limiting his involvement in last summer’s Ashes series to a spell of four overs in the first Test at Edgbaston.

Despite struggling with injury during the fifth day, Anderson played a key role in England’s victory in Cape Town, recording figures of 5-40 – his 28th five-for in Tests – during South Africa’s first innings.
Anderson will fly home to the UK in the next few days, with Craig Overton – who was called up as cover after illness spread through the England side prior to the first Test – remaining with the squad.
England’s third Test with South Africa will begin on January 16.
