James Anderson has been ruled out of England’s Test against Ireland due to a right calf injury.

The fast bowler suffered a calf tear when playing for Lancashire against Durham earlier this month. He was named in England’s squad for the four-day match against Ireland this week but has failed to recover in time for the occasion.

England have confirmed their XI for the match, with Olly Stone and Jason Roy to make their Test debuts. Left-arm spinner Jack Leach has also been included in the line-up having last featured in the winter tour of Sri Lanka. Somerset’s Lewis Gregory misses out.

At England’s squad announcement last week, chief selector Ed Smith stated that Anderson’s fitness would not be risked ahead of the five-match series against Australia.

“If it’s deemed too big a risk he will not play in the Ireland Test and we’ll give him every opportunity to get ready for Edgbaston.” said Smith.
