In the 2024-25 West Indies Championship, Jamaica sunk to their lowest first-class total in over a century, as no batter scored more than five.
The fourth round of fixtures saw Jamaica host Guyana at Sabina Park in Kingston, beginning on March 6. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first.
They made a bright start as openers Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Matthew Nandu put on 55 for the first wicket. Nandu went on to score 61, and put on 137 for the second wicket with Kevlon Anderson (116). But Guyana slipped from 192-2 to 251-5 and were eventually bowled out for 339.
Jamaica collapse to 44 all out against Guyana
Going in to bat on day two, Jamaica lost their first wicket in the sixth over as Odain McCatty scored a 20-ball duck – caught by Thaddeus Lovell off the bowling of Ronaldo Alimohamed.
That brought internationals Brandon King and Kirk McKenzie together in the middle, but their partnership didn't last long as King was dismissed by Nial Smith for four in the 11th over. The 56-Test capped Jermaine Blackwood then came and went for two, two overs later, before McKenzie departed in the 14th over for 2 (38), an innings lasting 70 minutes. That left Jamaica 16-4.
Javelle Glen departed next for five, having put on seven runs with Brad Barnes, making this the second-highest partnership of the innings. Glen's five was also the highest individual score of the innings.
The next four wickets went down for nine runs as Jamaica went from 23-5 to 32-9 in the space of 3.5 overs. Two more players with international experience were part of this collapse – Odean Smith and Marquino Mindley.
Last-wicket pair Ojay Shields and Tamarie Redwood then put on the highest stand of the innings – 12 runs, of which only six came off the bat. Redwood was the last man out, closing the innings at 44 all out in 25.5 overs.
Guyana used just three bowlers in the innings, of which Kevin Sinclair bowled a solitary over. Nial Smith finished with 4-21 in 13 overs, while Ronaldo Alimohamed took 6-17 in 11.5.
Jamaica register team's lowest total in 123 years
Of Jamaica's 44 runs, 17 were extras – including 10 no-balls from Smith in his 13-over spell. This was over three times more than the team's highest scorer with the bat, Javelle Glen, who made five. Brandon King, Odean Smith and Tamarie Redwood scored four each.
This is Jamaica's lowest first-class total in 123 years. The lowest is 33, scored in February 1902 against RA Bennett's XI, a team which featured Bernard Bosanquet – widely credited as the inventor of the googly. Bosanquet did not bowl in the innings though, as Edward Dowson took 8-21 and Evelyn Wilson 2-11. Even in that innings for Jamaica, opener GM Baines managed to score seven runs.
Jamaica's three lowest totals in first-class cricket have now all come at home, at Sabina Park. Their third-lowest is 47, scored against RS Lucas' XI in April 1895.
Thanks to the 17 extras, Jamaica now have the unique distinction of recording the highest-ever first-class score where the innings' top score is five runs. The previous record here (unconfirmed) appears to be Tasmania's 33 against Victoria in February 1858.
