Simi Singh, part of Ireland’s 2022 T20 World Cup squad is battling a serious liver illness

Ireland all-rounder Simi Singh, who represented them at the 2022 T20 World Cup, is currently suffering from a life-threatening illness.

Singh, 37, has represented Ireland in 35 ODIs and 53 T20Is, so far. He was part of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, and his last professional cricket match was a year ago, for Leinster Lightning in the Inter-Pro List A competition.

A statement from Cricket Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom on behalf of the board read: "We have received shocking news that our friend Simi Singh is currently dealing with life-threatening health circumstances.

"On behalf of Cricket Ireland, and indeed the wider Irish cricket community, I would like to extend our best wishes and prayers to Simi as he takes on this new fight."

After moving to Ireland, Simi has become a central figure within Irish cricket - whether at international, provincial or club level - he has shown a desire and drive to succeed. We now hope that this same drive will see him come through the current circumstances."

Singh set to undergo liver transplant

The details of his illness are yet to be confirmed, however, according to a Times of India report, Singh is currently admitted to a hospital in Gurgaon, India, awaiting a liver transplant, with his wife Agamdeep donating a part of hers.

"The transplant is likely to be performed very soon, and the doctors are positive that the outcome will be in Simi's favour and will give him a new lease of life," Singh’s father-in-law Parvinder was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

Singh, a spin-bowling all-rounder with lower-order batting capabilities, has 44 T20I wickets at an average of 27.84 and an economy of 7.61 and 39 ODI scalps. Among his notable batting displays, he scored 100 not out off 91 balls in an ODI against South Africa in 2021, with Ireland falling just 70 short of chasing 347.
