India Men have claimed a notable achievement, attaining the top ICC rank in all three formats – Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.
Despite not being able to reach the final of the T20 World Cup since 2014, India have been ranked top in Twenty20 Internationals since February 2022. They are on 267 points, one more than second-placed England.
Earlier this year, they became the top-ranked ODI side as well, following a 3-0 sweep against New Zealand at home. Their 114 points are two clear of second-ranked Australia.
Now, with a resounding win against Australia in the Nagpur Test match – by an innings and 132 runs – India toppled the tourists from the top spot in the Test rankings as well.
Their 115 points are now four clear of Australia’s 111. However, they need to win the second Test match, in Delhi, to stay at first place. At third place are England, with 106, who will play fourth-ranked New Zealand (100) later this week.
India are the second side to complete the feat. On August 28, 2012, South Africa Men had become the first team to achieve this rare ‘treble’ of ICC Rankings.
There is no such close competition in the women’s international formats. Australia’s (300) 16-point lead in T20Is over England (284) may seem significant, but even that number seems negligible when pitted against the 63-point chasm that separates Australia (172) and England (119) in ODIs. However, there is not a women’s Test rankings.
Over the course of the Nagpur Test, Rohit Sharma (previously 10th) and Usman Khawaja (eighth before the match) swapped positions in the ICC men’s Test batting rankings. Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith continue to occupy the top two places in that order. Rishabh Pant continues to occupy seventh place.
Jasprit Bumrah (fifth), Mitchell Starc (ninth), and Josh Hazlewood (tenth) retained their respective ranks despite their absence from the game. With 867 points, top-ranked Pat Cummins continues to remain clear of second-ranked R Ashwin (846). Ravindra Jadeja is at 16th place, Nathan Lyon 17th, Axar Patel 20th, and Scott Boland 42nd. Todd Murphy’s impressive debut allowed him to finish the week at 68th place.
With 424 points, Jadeja remains the top all-rounder, some distance clear of Ashwin (358). At seventh place is Axar (254), while Starc (270) and Cummins (221) are fifth and ninth, in that order.
