India A are currently playing in a three-match series of four-day unofficial ‘Tests’ against New Zealand A, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. The tours used to form a significant part of India’s cricketing calendar prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, serving as a bridge between domestic cricket and the national side.
Thanks to Joe Carter’s 197, New Zealand A put up 400 in the first ‘Test’ as Mukesh Kumar took 5-86. Abhimanyu Easwaran (132) and Rajat Patidar (176) led India A’s response, allowing them to declare on 571/6. The match fizzled out to a draw after New Zealand A reached 133/4.
Rain washed out two full days and parts of the other two in the second ‘Test’. Amidst that, captain Priyank Panchal (87) and wicketkeeper KS Bharat (76*) helped India A reach 228/6. Time ran out with New Zealand A on 39/2.
Ruturaj Gaikwad top-scored with 108 as India A posted 293 in the third ‘Test’, Matthew Fisher taking 4-52. Saurabh Kumar (4-48) and Rahul Chahar (3-53) then bowled out New Zealand A for 237. Panchal (62), Gaikwad (94), and Patidar (109*) then all got runs as India A set New Zealand A a target of 416. At lunch on the final day, New Zealand A are 118-3, with Cam Fletcher (44*) and Mark Chapman (2*) at the crease.
Four days after the ‘Tests’, the schedule sees India A take on New Zealand A in three one-day fixtures, on September 22, 25, and 27, in MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai.
