Imran Tahir

Guyana Amazon Warriors captain Imran Tahir found a way to motivate himself for his team’s Global Super League match against the Rangpur Riders.

Now 45, Tahir is still a sought-after cricketer on the T20 league circuit. Among his assignments was a BPL stint for the Rangpur Riders in the 2024 BPL, where Tahir claimed six wickets in three games while going at 6.17 an over. This included 5-26 against the Khulna Tigers. However, according to Tahir, the Riders are yet to pay his full amount as per his contact.

Tahir is now leading Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Global Super League, a T20 competition with five teams from five countries. Before the match against the Riders, Tahir said at the toss: “We want to win every game, that’s what we’re here for. Today’s game, especially, obviously want to win it for Guyana, but for personal reasons as well. I played for Rangpur Riders last year in BPL and haven’t got all my contract money. So that’s motivating me in today’s game. I want to do really well against them.

“We want to show them that Guyana welcomes them, they bring their local players here, earn some money, play some good cricket, and show them that we're better humans than them.”

Rangpur were bowled out for 117 after Nurul Hasan won the toss and opted to bat. With 2-24 in four overs, Tahir played his part, while Dwaine Pretorius claimed 3-15, Tanzim Hasan Sakib 2-21, and Gudakesh Motie 2-17. The Riders were 27-5 at one point before Khushdil Shah hit 58 in 47 balls to take them past a hundred.

The Amazon Warriors slumped to an identical 27-5 as well. Shai Hope’s 44-ball 35 was not enough as Kamrul Islam Rabbi (4-13) and Harmeet Singh (3-12) bowled them out for 102.

The outcome turned out to be crucial, for it kept the Amazon Warriors to four points from their four games. Victoria are on their way to beat Hampshire and finish on six points and qualify for the final, the only knockout match, and eliminate Hampshire.

That will make the last league match, between the Riders (two points in three games) and the Lahore Qalandars (four in three), of great importance. A win will put the Qalandars (net run rate -0.076) in the final, but the Riders (+0.083) do not need much to overhaul the Amazon Warriors (+0.107).
