England batter Harry Brook achieved a career-high Test batting rating, while India's R Ashwin lost his place as the No.2-ranked all-rounder in the latest update to the ICC's Test rankings on Wednesday (December 4).

Brook was one of the stars of England's victory over New Zealand in the first Test between the sides in Christchurch, scoring 171 in the second innings to help the tourists take a 151-run first-innings lead.

That effort has helped the Yorkshireman move up two spots in the batting rankings, from No.4 to No.2, displacing India's Yashasvi Jaiswal. Brook's rating is now 854, the best of his career so far and higher than the career-bests for the likes of Usman Khawaja, Gordon Greenidge, Graeme Smith and Misbah-ul-Haq.

Brook's previous highest rating was 829, achieved earlier this year after his mammoth 317 against Pakistan in Multan. Joe Root remains the world's No.1 ranked Test batter, while South African skipper Temba Bavuma moved up 14 spots to 10th place following his 70 and 113 against Sri Lanka.

In that same Test match, Marco Jansen took 7-13 to skittle Sri Lanka for 42, before taking 4-73 second time around. That performance has pushed him up 10 spots in the all-rounder rankings to No.2, displacing India's R Ashwin. Ashwin had been ranked as Test cricket's No.2 all-rounder since December 2022, behind compatriot Ravindra Jadeja, who remains No.1.

Jansen also received a big boost in the bowling rankings, moving up 19 places to ninth in the world. Sri Lanka's Prabath Jayasuriya fell by three places to eighth, allowing Australia's Pat Cummins to enter the top five.
