Travis Head in the 2024 T20 World Cup

Travis Head has overtaken Suryakumar Yadav to be ranked as the best T20I batter in the world.

Despite Australia's exit from the competition in the Super Eight phase, having looked to be well set as one of the favourites to win the tournament before their losses to Afghanistan and India, Head had a successful individual tournament. He top-scored with 76 in Australia's ultimately unsuccessful chase against India, striking at 176.74 to set up an ideal platform for his teammates. He also scored 68 off 49 balls against Scotland, again setting a foundation in a nervy run chase.

Head's form has been brewing for a while in the format. Earlier this year he scored a 22-ball 45 against New Zealand and of all openers who have played at least 10 innings in the format over the last 12 months, only Phil Salt has a higher average and strike rate.

Head's promotion means Yadav's seven-month uninterrupted run at the top of the charts has been broken. Yadav has been the top-ranked men's T20I batter since December 2023, and has also put in impressive performances during the T20 World Cup. He has moved down to second place with 842 points, while Head has just edged ahead on 844. Head has jumped up four places to reach the top spot, pushing down Yadav, Salt, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. Numbers five through nine (Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Aiden Markream and Brandon King), are unmoved, but West Indies batter Johnson Charles has broken into the top ten.

In other rankings news, Marcus Stoinis has lost his spot as the No.1 ranked allrounder, moving down to fourth with Wanindu Hasaranga back up to the top spot. Hardik Pandya has moved up to third with Mohammad Nabi in second.

Adil Rashid has kept his place at the top of the bowling rankings having been integral to England's T20 World Cup revival, while Rashid Khan has moved up to second after he helped Afghanistan secure a place in the tournament semi-finals for the first time ever.
