According to reports in the Evening Standard, the franchise teams based at The Oval and Lord’s are both set to contain ‘London’ in their official names.
The teams based at Edgbaston, Old Trafford and Headingley are likely to have Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds in their names respectively. Elsewhere, the Ageas Bowl-based franchise is likely to have ‘Southern’ in their team name, the Cardiff side is to be known as the ‘Western’ team, and the Nottingham-based side is likely to have ‘Trent’ in their title.

In the past, there has been opposition to certain location-based team names due to the potential risk of alienating fans from counties not hosting franchises. It is understood that after considerable research undertaken by the ECB, this is no longer a concern.

The reports come shortly after the confirmation of the competition’s playing conditions and suggestions that current England coach Trevor Bayliss is likely to coach the Edgbaston-based side.
